Adolescent Injuries

Director, Matthew Anthis, has worked at Newington College in various medical roles for the last seven years, covering Saturday Sport and also in a clinical role based on site. As such he has a lot of exposure and experience in treating various conditions common in adolescents .

These include:

  • Osgood-Schlatter Disease
  • Sever's Disease
  • Ankle Fractures (including Salter-Harris Fractures) and Sprains
  • Hip Flexor Apophysitis (Rectus Femoris and Iliopsoas)
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Knee Ligament Sprains and Ruptures including Meniscus Tears, ACL Ruptures, PCL/MCL/LCL Sprains and Patella Dislocations
  • Shoulder Dislocations and AC Joint Injuries

Matthew also has lots of experience prescribing and supervising resistance/weights programs for adolescents and is a big advocate for these programs as there is a large body of evidence to support that they reduce the risk of injuries, improve mood and cognitive performance as well as assist in the management of anxiety and depression. Despite previous anecdotal information, these programs are safe to perform with the right technique and supervision.

The effectiveness of this is seen where Matthew works closely with the Strength and Conditioning Coach in his role at Newington College, to ensure that students that are injured are able to participate in the Strength and Conditioning programs as much as possible, whilst making modifications for their injuries.
